A New and Difficult Phishing Fraud to Watch-out For
27th March 2018

Over the past few months a new style of Phishing fraud has emerged. When a known supplier has been attacked and their email credentials compromised, their customers will begin to receive emails from them.

The criminals will change the email passwords and assume control. All the usual email credentials of that supplier are the same and therefore appear genuine. The deception increases when real order references and invoices are quoted to help complete the fraud.

The email always includes a spreadsheet or PDF and because these emails are coming from a real email account for a real supplier they are difficult to detect.

Whilst this is extremely difficult to guard against, one important question should be asked - did you ask for the spreadsheet or PDF? If not, give them a call. It is a chore to have to call the supplier, but every organisation must work on developing their cyber security culture in the office.
